Excessive gingival display when smiling, commonly referred to as a “gummy smile”, may be a concern to both patients and clinicians. While not necessarily pathological, it can cause significant aesthetic concerns, and patients often present seeking a solution. As such, having a basic understanding of the different causes and treatment options is essential for dentists. This presentation will review the various etiologies of the gummy smile and discuss both surgical and
non-surgical clinical protocols from a periodontal perspective, in order to provide an aesthetic solution for these patients.
1. Understand basic facial and smile aesthetic principles
2. Understand the dentoalveolar and non-dentoalveolar etiologies of gummy smiles
3. Understand the treatment options that exist for gummy smiles, including non-surgical, surgical, and interdisciplinary strategies
